CREATURE COVE
Alabama is ranked #1 in aquatic biodiversity in the United States and we’re in the top 5 for overall biodiversity! Since we have more different types of creatures inhabiting our waters we must acknowledge the huge responsibility to take care of our waterways and conserve our lands for all of these wonderful creatures to continue to thrive.
The Coosa River Science School offers several live animal programs that are designed to meet the needs of any group. Whether young or young at heart, novice or expert, we’re here to introduce you to some of our most powerful teachers… the animals!

Raptor Trek
The raptor collection here at the 4-H Center incorporates both native and non-native hawks and owls. Come early to tour our state of the art facilities and meet the birds face-to-face. During this program you will learn about the role raptors play in the AL ecosystem as well as their unique adaptations and what we can all do to help our wildlife right here in Alabama. Our basic program is 25-30 minutes in length which includes the introduction of 2 raptor species. Packages start at $150 per program for groups of 25.
Raptor program opportunities may include:
-
Becoming a part of the training of our raptors. Learn how positive reinforcement works and use these techniques at home with your pets and children.
-
Witnessing these birds in flight. We are in the developmental stage for a fully flighted program with the opportunity to have these birds fly right over your head while you learn!
-
A unique lesson in history – let’s take a trip back in time to learn more about how raptors and humans have worked together for thousands of years!
Herp Journey
Herpetology describes the study of “herpetons” – creeping animals. Our collection of reptiles and amphibians at the Center is quite impressive. From toads and frogs, to snakes and an alligator! These animals are often misunderstood and seen as “scary” and “slimy”. Let’s tour the world of herps and learn more about their adaptations while dispelling many of the misconceptions associated with them. Participants will have the opportunity to handle some of these animals and observe their unique traits up close. Programs have a 30 minute minimum duration which includes the introduction of 5 species for $75 with a group maximum of 20 participants.
Alabama Expedition
This program provides a blended class that will introduce you to some herps as well as a bird of prey! Learn how these organisms depend on each other and contribute to the circle of life here in Alabama! Programs have a 30 minute minimum length with the introduction of 5 species for $75 with a group maximum of 20 participants.
All of our programs can be adapted to audiences of any age, youth through adult.
