(1953 – 2023)
Julie Farmer Dutton began her career with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System as the 4-H Agent in Lawrence County, Alabama. She transferred to Morgan County as the Extension Home Economist.
In that role she provided leadership to the Extension Homemakers Clubs throughout the county with monthly educational programs that the leaders would use in local meetings. Foods and food safety, financial management, home improvements, and many other skills were taught.
Julie also held workshops on furniture remodeling/upholstery, cake decorating, short-cuts to evening meals, and many more. The Extension office published a monthly newsletter showcasing the latest information on home and family. She organized a group to learn more about herbs and how to grow for home use.
As the County Extension Coordinator, Julie served on many advisory boards for agencies throughout the county. During her years in that office, the current Agriculture Service Center was moved from downtown Hartselle to the present location on Highway 36 West of Hartselle. In planning the office space, she took into consideration the storage space needed, the needs of staff when working with citizens, and included a fully functioning kitchen in the auditorium.
Technology was just beginning to be a large part of serving the community. Julie continued to make the latest computers, cell phones, and equipment available to staff.
She was active in the national Extension Association of Family and Consumer Science. She served as conference chair for several of the meetings in north Alabama. She received the Distinguished Service Awards and Meritorious Service Awards from the state and was recognized nationally.
In recognition of her years of service, the name of Julie F. Dutton is inscribed on the dedicatory plaque of the Extension Memorial Chapel.
