In remembrance …

Bobby G. Spears

(1929 – 2023)

Bobby Gene (Bob) Spears was born in Skedee, Oklahoma. He attended Oklahoma State University where he received a Bachelor’s degree in Animal Husbandry. After graduating, he managed cattle farms in South Carolina, New York, Pennsylvania, and Russellville, Alabama. Bob would later go on to receive a Master’s degree in Animal Science from the University of Tennessee.

Bob began his professional career with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System as an Assistant County Agent in DeKalb County. He would later become County Agent in Cullman County before moving to Sumter County as County Extension Coordinator.

He often used the I Dare You book with young 4-H’ers when he saw potential in them and their projects. There was a 4-H talent show in Rainsville (DeKalb County) and Bob encouraged a young man playing guitar to enter. Teddy Gentry (Alabama) entered and won the contest.

Bob served as a Director for the Alabama Cattlemen’s Association and worked with the local ALFA Board and Lion’s Club in Sumter County. He retired from ACES in 1993.

He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to fish, hunt, and play golf. If he wasn’t gardening or taking care of his own yard, he was helping others with theirs. He visited all 50 states and made trips to many countries around the world. Most importantly, Bob loved his family, friends and community, and was always gracious to help other in need.

In recognition of his years of service, the name of Bobby G. Spears is inscribed on the dedicatory plaque of the Extension Memorial Chapel.
