In remembrance …

Charles E. (Chuck) Browne

(1960 – 2022)

Charles Edward (Chuck) Browne was born in Birmingham and graduated from John Carroll High School.  He earned an undergraduate degree in Ornamental Horticulture-Landscape Design and a graduate degree in Ornamental Horticulture-Nursery Production from Auburn University.

During a career of more than 27 years, he served Lee, Chambers, and Russell counties, including teaching numerous Master Gardener classes statewide.  He also spent many years helping young people through the local 4-H clubs and the Tallapoosa Girls’ Ranch.

Browne was quoted as saying: “The Extension folks taught me methodology.  My family members instilled a work ethic in me that served me well throughout my career.”  He served as president of the Alabama Association of County Agricultural Agents and Specialists and was awarded the Distinguished Service Award.

Browne was active in his community.  He was one of the founding board members of Lake Martin Tourism Association, a member of Auburn Civitan Club, and Lee County Master Gardeners.  He operated Off the Beaten Path where he offered paddling experiences on local rivers and lakes.  His legacy of outdoor environmental programs using technological advances continue to benefit the communities he served.

Browne cared for his friends and co-workers and very often fixed and delivered home cooked meals for the sick and elderly.  He loved his family and especially children, many of whom referred to him as ‘Uncle Chunk” (that is correct Chunk nor Chuck).

He is survived by his wife, Cathy Browne, sons Trevor (Martina), Vincent, and Charles Browne, father, Charles A. Browne, and grandchild, Corbin Browne.

In recognition of his years of service, the name Charles E. (Chuck) Browne is inscribed on the dedicatory plaque of the Extension Memorial Chapel.
