In remembrance …

Douglas H. Summerford

(1963 – 2022)

Douglas H. Summerford was a simple man, who loved others with a huge heart.  He was happiest when he was with his family and loved when they were all together.  He was delighted to become “Bop Pop” to his granddaughters.

For twelve years, Summerford worked for the Alabama Cooperative Extension System at the Research Station in Headland and the Houston County Extension Office.  He loved his feathered friends including chickens, peacocks, and guineas as well as numerous furry friends who wandered to the house and found their forever home.

One of the 4-H Ambassadors remembered him “as my 4-H Dad.  He pushed all of us to become better as people.”  Another Ambassador shared: “He was a kind person, who cared so much about 4-H kids.  He was a prime example of someone ‘making the best better.’”

Doug was a fabulous friend and colleague!  He was always quick to help others.  I am so grateful to have worked alongside him as a 4-H Ambassador Advisor,” stated an Extension colleague.  Another colleague said: “He always gave the best advice to the 4-H State Ambassadors and pushed them to be great leaders in their community.”

The 2022 4-H State Ambassadors engaged in the development of the “4-H State Ambassador Endowment”.  This legacy program, named in honor of their mentor and friend, Mr. Doug Summerford, encourages future Ambassadors to raise philanthropic support for Alabama 4-H on an annual basis.  In the kick-off campaign, they raised $14,569.03.  The principal investment of $12,500 will be endowed with the remaining amount to fund seven individual 4-H Camp Scholarships for the summer of 2023.

He is survived by his wife, Kathy Summerford; children, Jacob Summerford (Corinne); Dana Bowden (Seth); Camilla Roberts (Lane); Perry Summerford; granddaughters, Quinn and Rowan Bowden and Nora Summerford; and father, Harriman Summerford.  His proceeded in death by his mother, Leslie Wilson Summerford and son, Gabriel Addison Summerford.

In recognition of his years of service, the name Douglas H. Summerford is inscribed on the dedicatory plaque of the Extension Memorial Chapel.
