(1950 – 2023)
Angela Elizabeth Golden Hughes was born in Louisville KY. She studied home economics at Samford University, graduating in 1973, before entering a long and distinguished career with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System as a county 4-H agent.
She led 4-H programs in Russell and Geneva counties before settling in Coffee County in 1978 where she touched the lives of countless young people and their families before retiring in 2004.
Angela had many successful 4-H show booths at the National Peanut Festival in Dothan, AL. The county 4-H members exhibited projects, gave demonstrations, and participated in district and state competitions with winners every year.
She chaperoned youth to the Citizenship Washington Focus in Washington DC, National 4-H Congress in Chicago IL, Aerospace Camp in Cape Canaveral FL, and many 4-H Camps. The Citizenship Washington Focus trip was during President Ronald Regan’s term. It inspired one of the girls to go back to Washington DC after college and work for President Bush. A career highlight including have two generations of the same family in 4-H, a mother and a daughter.
In 2008, Angela was named to the Alabama 4-H Wall of Fame.
Angela taught GED classes at Enterprise State Junior College before retiring to a life of family, grandchildren, travel and service. “Nana Camp” included her six grandchildren and a handful of “local grandchildren” filled summers with fun and activities. She played the piano and organ in every church she attended from high school until her passing. She also sang in the choir, taught children, adult, and senior adult classes.
Angela was known to all as a faithful Christian and a reliable friend. Many remember her joyfully whistling hymns throughout the day. She was dedicated to life and helping people.
In recognition of her years of service, the name Angela G. Hughes is inscribed on the dedicatory plaque of the Extension Memorial Chapel.
