Mary Agnes Isom was born in Athens, Alabama, on October 17, 1924. She attended Athens College and David Lipscomb College (Nashville, Tennessee) before receiving her B.S. degree from Auburn University in 1946.
While in college, Mary taught high school home economics, Biology, Economics, and Science at Clements High School during the summer of 1944. Before graduation from Auburn, she also became a student Home Demonstration Agent for Alabama Extension in Etowah County. Immediately upon completing her degree, Mary was named Assistant Home Demonstration Agent and worked in Cherokee and Etowah Counties. A few months later, she moved to Marion County as Home Demonstration Agent and remained there for five years. At the time she became the Home Demonstration Agent, she was the youngest full-time agent in the state of Alabama. She completed her service in Colbert County after two years there.
Mary also was wife and mother. She married Dr. Marshall Dugger, Jr., in 1954 and they had two sons — Marshall III and Thomas. In describing his mother, one of the sons said, “She was friendly and lovable in every way.” He remembered her many successful projects in cooking, sewing, home decorating, and especially fashion design.
In tribute to her contributions and accomplishments, the name Mary Isom Dugger is inscribed on the dedicatory plaque of the Extension Memorial Chapel.
