Nina Baker Reed

(1928 – 1989)

Nina Jo Baker was born June 30, 1928, in Centre, Alabama. She graduated from Cherokee County High School in 1945 and enrolled in the Gadsden Business College. While there, she excelled in typing and shorthand. These skills were to take her far.

After becoming Nina Baker Reed, she worked as a secretary for Johnson Insurance Agency. She left to have a baby and remained at home until 1961. In that year, Mrs. Reed joined the Extension family in Cherokee County. Her secretarial abilities were respected and appreciated by the clien­tele of the County Agent’s office as well as the professional staff in the office there. She was one of those secretaries who made things run smoothly.

Nina is remembered as a kind and gentle person with many talents. She had exceptional skills as a homemaker and was a devoted mother and wife. Professionally, she excelled in all her duties and was capable of effectively handling large amounts of work while still finding time to manage her home and family.

Nina was also active in community and church affairs. She was a member of the First Methodist Church and at the center of all aspects of church activities. An extremely generous and thoughtful person, she was happiest when doing for others.

In recognition of her abilities and accomplishments, the name Nina Baker Reed is inscribed on the dedicatory plaque of the Extension Memorial Chapel.
